History |

 | |
Because of the very wide diversity of soils and climatic conditions, with the Institut National des Appellations d’Origine (INAO), Côtes de Provence began the hierachisation of their lands, the “terroirs”, much in the same way as is done in Burgundy. The establishing of the Côtes de Provence Sainte-Victoire AOC in 2005, was the first step in this process and should extend to other sections of Côtes de Provence in the next few years. |
Appellation areas |
The Sainte-Victoire Côtes de Provence vineyards cover a surface of 2225 ha east of Aix-en-Provence, at the foot of Montagne Sainte-Victoire, comprising 17 private cellars and 5 cooperatives. |
Climate |
The climate of this vineyard has a slightly continental influence. With protection from the influence of the sea in the south coming from the Monts Auréliens hills and the Sainte-Baume range, it extends to the slopes of the upper valley of the Arc. The rocky outcrop of Sainte-Victoire adds to this effect of a continental micro climate and blunts a little the cutting edge of the Mistral which nevertheless sometimes blows very hard, protecting the vines from the attack of parasites. The Sainte-Victoire Côtes de Provence vineyards, like all the Provence vineyards, is considered as one of the most natural in France, thanks to the effect the Mistral has in keeping it dry. |
Geology |
The poor and shallow soils, made of limestone and clayey sandstone, produce high quality vines: strong and smooth reds, fine and elegant rosés and bright aromatic whites. |
